The 24th Arctic Dialogue took place on 4 November 2024 at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin. The meeting was organised by the German Arctic Office in cooperation with the Royal Norwegian Embassy and provided space for a roundtable discussion on current Arctic policy issues. The session was opened by Volker Rachold (German Arctic Office) and Erik Øverland (Royal Norwegian Embassy).
Discussions focused on reflections from the Arctic Circle Assembly 2024, including international feedback on Germany’s updated Arctic policy guidelines, Germany’s visibility in the Arctic, the increasing role of NATO in the region, and perspectives for future German contributions to the Arctic Circle Assembly. Initial considerations regarding the UN Decade of the Cryosphere (2025–2034) were also addressed.
During the roundtable, representatives of the participating institutions presented their current activities. Arne Riedel and Fenja Kroos highlighted Ecologic Institute’s work on Arctic governance, including ongoing research projects on adaptive management, governance analyses and dynamic marine conservation in the context of climate change.
Following the Arctic Dialogue, a public event on "Science Diplomacy in the Arctic region" was held as part of the Berlin Science Week 2024, organised jointly by the German Arctic Office and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. The event explored the future role of science and science diplomacy in the Arctic against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions and changing conditions for international cooperation.
Since 2013, the Arctic Dialogue has served as an important information exchange forum for strengthening open dialogue between Arctic research and policy in Germany. Initiated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), and guided by its German Arctic Office, the forum provides representatives of relevant German federal ministries, agencies research institutions and civil society organisations with an opportunity to exchange on current developments, projects, scientific findings, field experiences and international networks in the region. The German Arctic Office organises meetings twice a year in cooperation with a host ministry or research institution. Ecologic Institute has regularly and actively contributed to the Arctic Dialogue since 2013.
