Post-2030 EU Climate Framework and Governance Architecture

The EU is preparing the next phase of its climate governance framework, with important decisions ahead on how to guide action towards the newly agreed interim 2040 target and ultimately climate neutrality by 2050. In this project, funded by the European Climate Foundation (ECF), Ecologic Institute continues its role as a thought leader on the EU’s post-2030 governance architecture, offering targeted analysis, engagement, and practical tools to strengthen climate governance at EU and national level.

Supporting clearer and more effective EU climate governance

The project builds on a recent study by Ecologic Institute that identifies practical ways to simplify and improve EU climate governance. The project seeks to disseminate the ideas explored in the study to a wider audience of policymakers and experts, helping to ensure that simplification strengthens transparency, accountability, and long-term planning rather than weakening them.

Contributing to ongoing policy discussions

Ecologic Institute continues its role as a trusted knowledge partner in European climate policy debates. The team contributes to expert meetings and exchanges that bring together policymakers, researchers, and civil society to discuss how EU and national governance frameworks can evolve for the post-2030 period. This includes providing input, facilitating discussions, and helping connect different strands of policy work.

Keeping key information resources up to date

A central element of the project is maintaining and improving the Climate Framework Laws Info-Matrix – an online resource managed by Ecologic Institute that tracks climate framework laws across Europe. The project updates the database with recent legal developments and refines how laws are assessed.

By linking research, dialogue, and practical tools, the project aims to support future EU climate governance that is clear, coordinated, and capable of delivering on Europe’s long-term climate goals.
