UCLG Learning and INTERLACE (2022). Urban Ecosystem Restoration & Nature-based Solutions. UCLG Peer Learning Note #31. Available at: https://learning.uclg.org/peer_learning_notes/pln-31/ in English and Spanish.

Restorative nature-based solutions, such as the restoration of wetlands and rivers, can help tackling challenges such as biodiversity loss, social inequity and climate change in cities around the world. United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) together with several other partners of the INTERLACE project published a Peer Learning Note on the potential of urban ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions. The Peer Learning note seeks to share practices and lessons learned discussed during the first face-to-face INTERLACE consortium meeting and "Cities Talk Nature" engagement event, which took place from 9 until 13 May 2022 in Costa Rica.

It provides good practice examples from different cities and peri-urban areas in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain and Colombia on how to integrate nature in the search for a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient urban development. The Peer Learning Note is targeted at cities, local and regional governments, communities and organizations worldwide interested in the topic of urban restoration.

Sandra Naumann, Benedict Bueb, Ewa Iwaszuk and McKenna Davis, who are part of the INTERLACE project, authored the background section as well as the key lessons and recommendations that can be found in the Peer Learning Note. The INTERLACE project is coordinated by Ecologic Institute and funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. It brings together a unique consortium of European and Latin American partners to contribute to effectively restoring and rehabilitating urban ecosystems to make cities more livable, resilient and inclusive.
