It has been prepared with a view to the intersessional process underway concerning the future of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) after 2020, as well as the recently launched Alliance for High Ambition on Chemicals and Waste and the parallel explorations concerning global arrangements to address plastic pollution and highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs). The 2030 targets for decarbonising the EU economy have been agreed, but what does this mean concretely for the European energy and transport systems? In a new publication, Agora Energiewende is providing exactly this "Big Picture" of the EU energy transformation up until 2030. Based on an analysis of where we are today and where we need to be in 2030, the authors propose ten priorities and four flagship initiatives to make the European energy transition a success. The authors of this study identified and assessed key drivers of success for measure driven improvements that could be used to develop more successful conservation measures in the future in order to achieve a better conservation status of species and habitats. Marine plastic pollution is a fast growing problem and it is not yet possible to estimate how severe the impacts currently are. Between 4.8 and 12.7 Mt of plastics ends up in the ocean each year, adding to the uncontrolled plastic waste already floating around the world’s seas. Despite many good initiatives and action plans, the world is about to lose the overall battle.
