Trade, Societies and Sustainable Development (SUSTRA)

May 2001 to December 2004

In cooperation with the European SUSTRA-Network Ecologic analyses the relationship between trade, environment and sustainable development. As a part of the project, Ecologic convened an international workshop on the architecture of global governance of trade and sustainable development which focussed on the global institutional set-up, the relationship between multilateral environmental agreements and WTO rules as well as the role of non-State actors in the international fora. WTO Ministerial Conferences' site events represent unique occasions for trade and environment experts to meet and exchange opinions. Large numbers of high level policy makers, researchers and academics as well as representatives from civil society groups from all over the world come together to discuss recent developments in the area, conflicts between trade, environment and sustainable development, and potential solutions. Submissions to UNCTAD on International Investment Regime

As a contribution to the ongoing discussion on the reform of the international in-vestment regime, members of the Ecologic legal team submitted two briefs to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). UNCTAD is a UN organisation dealing with developing countries and their role in international trade and investment. Both briefs are available for download.

Draft model international investment agreements for sustainable development

International investment agreements and arbitration have significant roles for sustainable development. However, there is wide scepticism about the approach currently reflected in the existing agreements. Konrad von Moltke, Partner at Ecologic, together with colleagues at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), developed a Model Agreement on Investment.
