The "Plastic Pirates" are a citizen science project to research litter pollution in German rivers. Throughout Germany, young people are integrated into the scientific research process by collecting data on litter pollution at rivers. The data is then analyzed by scientists and published in scientific journals.

The article describes the background and objectives of the project, explains the scientific methodology and presents some of the results from the first years of the project.

The Plastic Pirates project has already produced comprehensive findings on the abundance and composition of litter pollution in German rivers.
