Peatlands are unique habitats for highly specialized animal and plant species, and their protection plays a decisive role in climate protection and other environmental goals. When rewetting degraded peatlands, including near-natural peatlands with an impaired water balance, synergies and conflicts of objectives can arise, particularly between nature, water and climate protection objectives. While synergies are sought, conflicting objectives must be considered and resolved.

The MoorNet status conference on 19 and 20 November 2024 focused on the topic of "The role of nature conservation and climate protection in peatland protection - synergies and conflicting objectives". The aim was to gain an overview of current and expected future synergies and conflicts of objectives between nature conservation and climate protection in peatland protection and to identify specific further development and action requirements, both in terms of content and in terms of the "instruments" and "formats" required.

The event was aimed in particular at stakeholders who are specifically concerned with synergies and conflicting goals in the practical implementation of peatland protection. The event took place in German.
