Peatlands were unique ecosystems that not only provided habitat for a wide range of specialized plant and animal species, but also served as significant natural carbon stores and climate regulators. In light of the extensive drainage and use of peatland areas in Germany, the R&D project "MoorNet" supported the implementation of the German Federal Government's National Peatland Protection Strategy. The aim was to advance the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of peatlands through research, networking, and communication.
At the MoorNet Final Conference 2025, results and approaches from the research and development project were presented. The event also offered space to discuss further developments and to identify additional needs for action. Key topics included overcoming implementation barriers, funding issues, and the need for communication strategies and networking concepts to strengthen and accelerate the rewetting of peatlands.
In addition to the presentations, an excursion to the Möllmer Seewiesen (Brandenburg) provided insights into peatland conservation practice. A poster session also offered the opportunity to exchange current findings from ongoing projects and research activities.
The aim of the event was to identify support needs in peatland conservation, strengthen collaboration, and gather feedback and suggestions regarding the continuation of the R&D network MoorNet.
