How can philanthropists make informed and responsible choices when investing the endowment of their foundation? How can they avoid destroying with their investments what they seek to protect with their grants? R. Andreas Kraemer of Ecologic Institute makes concrete suggestions in his article in the summer 2011 Philanthropy Letter of the Fondation de Luxembourg.

The Fondation de Luxembourg manages donations and foundations on behalf of philanthropists, and is an enabler and advisor for donors, foundations and endowments, and asset managers servicing them. In addition to the management of funds, programmes and grants, it has taken up the issue of mission-based investment for philanthropy, and invited R. Andreas Kraemer for an introductory article on the issue.

<p>Ecologic Institute cooperates on researching the "Environmental Security in the Arctic Ocean". The work culminates in a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) and a book that addresses the prevention of conflicts in relation to scarcity of resources, and threats to environmental security with implications for economic, cultural and political instability. The project's main sponsor is the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS).</p>

The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) seeks to create a system of graduated co-operation and association contracts. The core will be a pan-European internal market. However, the integration of other policies, most notably in the areas of security co-operation, energy and the environment, play a crucial role. Other geopolitical actors like Russia will compete with the EU on the concepts that will define the common European space of the future.
