Nature-based solutions (NbS) play a vital role in helping towns and cities adapt to climate change. But turning a bright idea into a well-maintained, long-lasting project often raises plenty of practical questions. The new Toolkit for Nature-Based Climate Adaptation, available via the German Climate Preparedness Portal (KLiVO Portal), supports local authorities with a quality-assured selection of tools, guidance documents and planning aids. Ecologic Institute developed the toolkit on behalf of the German Environment Agency and integrated it into the portal.
Supporting local authorities
The toolkit brings together tried-and-tested instruments and organises them along a typical municipal workflow: from initial orientation and planning through to implementation, maintenance, monitoring and evaluation. Local authority departments, planners and other stakeholders will find concise fact sheets outlining each tool, advice on how to apply it at different project stages, as well as links to further resources and practical examples. In short, the toolkit gives councils a clear overview of suitable instruments, helps them plan and deliver measures more effectively, and strengthens their capacity to embed nature-based solutions for the long term.
Structure and features of the toolkit
All tools are available via the German KLiVO Portal, which brings together quality-assured and freely accessible climate preparedness services. Each tool, guidance document and resource is presented in a compact profile including a short description, guidance on use, thematic focus and further links, making it quick and straightforward to identify the right support.
The instruments are structured around four key phases of a typical municipal process, guiding users directly to relevant tools:
- Understand: What are nature-based solutions and why are they worthwhile for climate adaptation?
→ Explore the tools in the KLiVO Portal - Plan: How can nature-based solutions be integrated into local planning processes?
→ Explore the tools in the KLiVO Portal - Implement: How does a concept become reality?
→ Explore the tools in the KLiVO Portal - Maintain and Evaluate: How can nature-based solutions remain effective over time – and how can this be assessed?
