On 20 October, Jenny Tröltzsch, Ecologic Institute, contributed to the international conference “Future Disasters, Our Concern Today: Nature Restoration and Climate Adaptation” in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In an online presentation Jenny shared practical experiences and key lessons on implementing nature-based solutions (NbS) in German cities.
Nature-based solutions for climate adaptation in German cities
The presentation drew on findings from the project “Climate Adaptation Naturally!”, which explored opportunities and challenges associated with implementing nature-based solutions for climate adaptation, with a particular focus on urban areas.
The presentation introduced the concept of nature-based solutions and their contribution to climate adaptation, highlighting practical examples from German cities. Measures such as pocket parks, green roofs and flood retention basins demonstrate how green and blue infrastructure can help reduce urban heat and mitigate flood risks, while providing additional environmental and social benefits.
Key lessons for successful implementation
Drawing on a literature review, expert interviews and six stakeholder workshops, the presentation highlighted several key lessons for the successful implementation of NbS, including that integrated and context-specific approaches are essential. Combining different green and blue measures and, where appropriate, technical solutions can address multiple climate risks and local needs. Furthermore, strengthening cooperation and institutional structures is crucial. Cross-departmental collaboration, coordination mechanisms and cooperation across different levels of government can help overcome institutional and administrative barriers. And early stakeholder involvement, co-creation and effective communication can increase acceptance, improve the quality of measures and support their long-term effectiveness.
Overcoming barriers and strengthening local cooperation
The final part of the presentation addressed a number of challenges to implement NbS at the local level and discussed potential solutions. Particular attention was given to harnessing synergies through integrated approaches, strengthening economic incentives for NbS and improving cooperation between public authorities and the private sector.
