The Guidance on Climate Resilient Landscapes project, financed by DG CLIMA, will develop actionable guidance to strengthen climate resilience in Europe's rural landscapes. With floods, droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires becoming more frequent and severe, landscapes need to be managed in ways that help them absorb, recover from, and mitigate such events, supporting both ecological and human resilience.
The project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium to define the climate resilient landscape approach and to provide policy-relevant tools, technical guidance, and governance frameworks for embedding resilience into land use planning and territorial development. It will deliver methodologies for co-creation with stakeholders, a mapping of EU policy and funding instruments, recommendations for mainstreaming nature-based and ecosystem-based solutions across governance levels, and ecosystem-specific guidance for implementation.
The guidance is designed to support regional and local actors, policymakers, land managers, and planners in developing effective, inclusive, and future-oriented strategies for landscape transformation. A broad consultation process will accompany the project, including expert panels, four in-person multi-country workshops, and a final event in Brussels.
Ecologic Institute’s Role
Ecologic Institute coordinates the project and works with partners Ramboll Consulting and Tecnalia. Our team leads on:
- Defining the climate resilient landscape approach
- Developing indicators for evaluation and monitoring
- Exploring funding and financing options
- Ensuring uptake in EU policy
- Preparing landscape-specific implementation resources (agricultural land, forests, hydrological landscapes, and coasts)
