Local and Regional State of Play and Policy Recommendations Concerning Sustainable Heating and Cooling: Focusing on EU Policy Level

The project Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals for Soils aimed to examine how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Target 15.3 on 'Land Degradation Neutrality' could be implemented in Germany and at the global level. The KlimaDiskurs.NRW (short: KD) is an independent platform to discuss varying interests and find solutions around climate protection in the German federal state of North-Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Founded in 2012, it aims at bringing together various actors from the industry and energy state NRW, creating space for the discussion of their different viewpoints, increasing the level of trust and discussing potential solutions. Prior a second funding period, the funding Foundation Mercator commissioned the Ecologic Institute with an evaluation of the KD.Read more

Internet of Services and Things and Compliance of Technical Infrastructure with Environmental Standards – A Conceptual Study for Schwerin and its Surrounding Areas

Several regions, notably in eastern Germany, are faced with the challenge of maintaining infrastructure and services while coping with shrinking populations and financial constraints. Advancement of Klimaschutz-Plus in Baden-Württemberg

The state of Baden Württemberg developed a new climate policy in 2013. This changes the preconditions for the funding scheme Klimaschutz-Plus an important part of the state's climate policy. The Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg (IFEU) and the Ecologic Institute supported the Ministry of Environment Baden-Württemberg to update the support program Klimaschutz-Plus. Throughout the project, cooperation with the applicants and recipients of funding as well as with the program's coordinators was a major focus of this project.Read more

Multi-level Governance and Partnership Practices in Development and Implementation of Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP)

Signatories to the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) and their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) play a major role in the task of designing and implementing policies for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions on the local level. The success of the CoM to win close over 6000 signatories required– and still requires – flexibility as well as guidance. The municipalities need at the same time flexibility for their SEAPs to adapt to local governance and financing frameworks, and guidance regarding their design and implementation.Read more

"City of the Future" Ahrensfelde 2030 and beyond – Living together sustainably

June 2015 to May 2016
What can the city of the future look like? What do visions of a sustainable resilient city encompass? As part of the contest "City of the Future" funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research 52 municipalities were developing their vision 2030+. This participatory process engaged citizens and further city actors such as associations or organizations to think holistically of their city in the future, give some recommendations for action and proposals for implementations. Knowledge, Assessment, and Management for AQUAtic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services aCROSS EU policies (AQUACROSS) aims to support EU efforts to protect aquatic biodiversity and ensure the provision of aquatic ecosystem services. Funded by Europe's Horizon 2020 research programme, AQUACROSS seeks to advance knowledge and application of ecosystem-based management (EBM) for aquatic ecosystems to support the timely achievement of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy targets.
