In the new Horizon Europe project SEA4FUTURE Ecologic Institute leads the social science and humanities research on integrating fishers’ knowledge and expertise into new monitoring processes of gears and defining new marine protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Officially launched on 1 January 2026, SEA4FUTURE has the ambition to catalyse a blue transformation of the Mediterranean seafood sector.

This publication provides a quantitative overview of the development and status of environmental crime in Germany between 2013 and 2024, based on data from the police crime statistics ("Polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik") and the Federal Statistical Office's criminal prosecution statistics ("Strafverfolgungsstatistik"). The report provides both an overview of general trends and an in-depth account of individual environmental offences. The report was prepared by a team from Ecologic Institute on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency.

Study on US LNG and European Gas Policy Draws Broad International Media Attention

A policy brief by Ecologic Institute, the Clingendael Institute and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs analyses Europe's growing dependence on US liquefied natural gas (LNG). Based on a novel assessment of gas imports across the entire European Economic Area (EEA, including Norway), the study shows that in 2025 US supplies accounted for almost 40% of total gas imports and nearly 60% of LNG imports into the EEA.

Climate change is exacerbating drought, low water levels, and heavy rainfall in German river basins, posing new challenges for agriculture, forestry, water management, ecosystems, and municipal planning. Against this backdrop, the project KliMaWerk investigated how the landscape water balance can be made climate-resilient through integrated, practical strategies and measures. The KliMaWerk final report summarises the key findings and strategic conclusions.

Ecologic Institute: Science and Policy for a Sustainable World

Ecologic Institute conducts inter- and transdisciplinary environmental research. In its role as a private, independent organization, Ecologic Institute is dedicated to the preparation of relevant sociopolitical aspects of sustainability research and contributing new knowledge to environmental policy. Innovative research methods, an orientation on practice and a transdisciplinary approach ensure scientific excellent and social relevance. The work done at Ecologic Institute covers the spectrum of environmental topics and includes the integration of environment-related issues into other political spheres.

Ecologic Institute was founded in 1995 and collaborates closely with other European and international bodies, including active participation as a member of the Ecological Research Network (Ecornet). Today, the more than 100 individuals at Ecologic Institute work in a variety of international and interdisciplinary project teams.
