Ecologic Institute supported the European Commission and the Ad-hoc Task Group on Hydromorphology in organising a Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) workshop. This CIS workshop on the subject of significant adverse effects was organized on 23 and 24 April 2018 in Brussels. The Workshop Summary Report presents the main discussions that occurred during this meeting. Utilizing Qualitative Information to Formulate Disaster Risk Reduction Measures for Coastal Regions
The article illustrates both the potential and challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration amongst researchers from the social sciences/humanities and the natural sciences/engineering in formulating disaster risk reduction measures for coastal regions. The authors, among them Ecologic Institute's Grit Martinez, share their experiences of working across different scientific and engineering disciplines in the EU project RISC-KIT to co-produce disaster risk reduction measures suitable for specific regional and local contexts, in this case two coastal study areas in Europe (Porto Garibaldi, Italy and Rio Formosa, Portugal). At temperatures above 30° C, the project team of "Information Platform for the Restoration of Rivers" went on a tour through Germany to document restoration projects on rivers. Due to the low water levels in 2018, the hydromorphological conditions of the water bodies, that were of particular interest to the project team, were clearly visible. Nevertheless, the group was able to enjoy some time to cool down, which was a welcome change from their routine at the hot office indoors.
Communications – Water
The 7th workshop of the forum "Fish Protection and Downstream Migration" was dedicated to the topic of improving the implementation of measures at the end of the second cycle of the forum. The workshop took place in Dresden in April 2018. Important to this workshop was the task of creating a summary of the intense discourse that had taken place between all of the stakeholders over the past six years. A case study of ecosystem servicevaluation for the Emscher restoration generation project
Though the Ecosystem Service (ESS) approach is considered promising for integrated ecosystem management, its operationalisation is hampered by the lack of agreed evaluation instruments. To demonstratethe suitability of a structured ESS evaluation, the authors, among them Ecologic Institute's Dr. Manuel Lago and Gerardo Anzaldúa, conducted a case study estimating the impact of therestoration of the Emscher River and its tributaries on the provision, use and benefit of ESS. Under its ‘Framework contract for Evaluation, review and development of EU Water Policy', the European Commission DG Environment has issued a service request for a Specific Contract to provide "Support for the elaboration of guidance on WFD harmonised environmental requirements for HMWB and hydromorphology". The aim of this Specific Contract is to ensure support for the follow-up activities towards the further elaboration of deliverables as outlined in the Terms of Reference of the Ad-Hoc Task Group on Hydromorphology. The requested services include the provision to the Water Unit in DG Environment of independent and timely support and advice on scientific, socio-economic and technical issues related to the activities of the ATG. This includes the provision of products of high technical quality as specified in the description of tasks and deliverables.Read more
The DEMEAU project followed a solutions-oriented approach using applied research and demonstration sites, and explored four promising technologies for emerging contaminants removal and/or degradation: Managed Aquifer Recharge, Hybrid Ceramic Membrane Filtration, Automatic Neural Net Control Systems and Advanced Oxidation Techniques. Impacted by drainage schemes
Hydromorphological alterations for drainage are widespread pressures on water bodies in Europe. Because of the importance of the water uses relying on drainage schemes, such as agriculture and urban areas, not all necessary restoration measures can be taken without significant adverse effect on the water use. Therefore many of the affected water bodies have been designated as heavily modified (HMWB). Still, in a substantial number of these water bodies, some mitigation measures should be taken to reach Good Ecological Potential (GEP).
